Last April was published in the Official Journal of the European Union Commission Recommendation of April 9, 2013 on the use of common methods to measure and communicate the environmental performance of products and organizations throughout its cycle life. (OJEU L 124/1 of 04.05.2013)
This recommendation is for both member states and to private and public organizations:
Measure or plan to measure the environmental performance of their products, services or organizations.
Communicate or plan to communicate information about the environmental performance in the lifecycle stakeholders, be they in the private sector, public sector or civil society in the single market.
The method of Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) is recommended to measure and communicate the potential environmental impact of a product life cycle. The guide for application of this method is published in Annex II of the Recommendation itself (OJ of 04.05.2013).
To measure and communicate the environmental impact of an organization's life cycle is the recommended method of the Environmental Footprint of Organizations (EFO). Annex III of the Recommendation provides guidance for their application.
